The Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, has made what many will consider a controversial statement, when he alleged that the state capital is now safe, even more than Lagos, Abuja and other state capitals in Nigeria.
Shettima, whose state had been ravaged by Boko Haram insurgents in the last few years, said this while speaking to Batch “B” National Youths Service Corps members deployed to the state, who are undergoing orientation in Bauchi.
“With all sense of responsibility and honesty, am saying that the worst in Maiduguri is over. Borno is now on the path to sustainable peace.
“Maiduguri is now safe even more than Lagos, Abuja and many other state capitals in Nigeria,” he said.
Shettima commended the corps members’ determination to serve their country by leaving their comfort zones and serving in the state, assuring them that the NYSC scheme would open their eyes to the reality of national coexistence, adding that the future of Nigeria rests on the shoulder of the youth.
He promised to provide necessary assistance to the corps members, including an increase in their allowances and the provision of decent accommodation.
