Over 50,000 temporary jobs provided at Lagos Trade Fair

Segun Alabi, spokesperson for the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the 10-day Lagos International Trade Fair has provided temporary jobs for about 50,000 youth and another 10,000 artisans.Some of the youths employed on adhoc basis canvassing for customers at ongoing Lagos International Trade Fair

Majority of the people employed work as sales people, dancers and temporary office assistants.

Most of the youth, who refused to disclose their pay package, simply described the 10-day pay as good.

Sources close to some of the companies said the remuneration for adhoc staff for the 10 days ranged between N30, 000 and N50, 000, depending on the hiring firm and the nature of work.

According to Dele Kabiru, a carpenter: “the annual fair is a bridge” following the lull in the nation’s construction sector.

Mr. Kabiru said that most of them have so far earned about N250 000 from the construction of the companies’ pavilions.

Isan Aremu, an electrician commended the LCCI for the annual fair and the temporary employment fallouts.

Mr. Aremu said so far, he has earned about N180, 000 from the wiring of three companies pavilions.

“The job is ongoing and as companies continue to construct their pavilions, I am expecting additional income.

Saka Salami, a painter said he has earned about N100, 000 so far from the painting of five companies pavilions.

“This is my first experience at the annual LCCI trade fair and I thank God because it came in handy when everywhere is dry,” Mr. Salami said.

He said this experience has encouraged him to think about preparing for enhanced painting business in 2016.
Meanwhile, Mr. Alabi, LCCI Corporate Communications Manager, said that empowerment of the youth and creation of jobs were part of the contributions of the fair to the economy.

He said the number of youth and artisans engaged at the fair might increase as more companies arrive to set up their pavilions.

“On our part, we don’t dictate to participating companies how to remunerate their adhoc staff but we also expect that it will be a win win situation,” Mr. Alabi said.

Meanwhile, many unemployed youth early Saturday trooped into Tafawa Balewa Square, venue of the 29 edition of Lagos International trade fair, seeking temporary employment from participating companies.
