PMB, Jonathan, Adesina, Elumelu, Others Among 100 Most Influential Africans

The President of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, former President Goodluck Jonathan, AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina and Tony Elumelu, Chairman, Board of Directors, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, are among the 100 most influential Africans of 2015.

The list published by New African, a London-based pan-African magazine which has over 2.6 million readers all over the world, presents Africa’s definitive power list and profiles the continent’s top game changers in eight different fields: Politics (22), Public Office (4), Arts and Culture (21), Business (21), Civil Society (11), Technology (9), Media (7), and Sports (5).

The list included the name Nigerian Diasporan and UK Member of Parliament (MP), Chuka Umunna; World Bank vice president and treasurer, Arumah Oteh, as well as minister of environment, Amina J. Mohammed.

The former and now President of Nigeria, President Buhari and Jonathan made it to the list, for the significant roles they played during the Nigeria’s 2015 elections that made the very first transition of power from a ruling government to an opposition party in Nigeria a violence free one. Jonathan’s impeccable humility in accepting defeat and Buhari’s magnanimity in victory ensured that post election crisis was prevented in Nigeria.

Amina Mohammed is currently minister of the environment in Nigeria. Before her appointment as a Minister, she was the special adviser on Post-2015 Development Planning at the United Nations where her absolute contribution was to the shaping of the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development across three years of complex negotiations and the most inclusive consultation process in the history of the United Nations, her vision and voice helping to bring people together, enlist new partners to the cause and reach global consensus on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Akinwumi Adesina is the former minister of agriculture and rural development in Nigeria,  led the drive in curbing corruption in the fertilizer distribution scheme which resulted to significant improvement in agricultural production and brought to a remarkable decrease in food importation.

Chuka Umunna was recognised for bringing a significant positive recognition for Nigerians in the UK while Arumah Oteh was recognised for her elevation to one of the most significant positions at the World Bank.

Omar Ben Yedder, of the New African said the list of the “100 Most Influential Africans” celebrates persons and organisations that have shaped the continent, the trail blazers, influencers and the rising stars who are redefining Africa’s future in the various ramificationd in which they are in.

He described the selection of Elumelu as one of the most influential Africans, by saying In the increase in global and interconnected world, we need champions, game changers that are making a difference, changing perceptions and giving us a redefinition of what is possible. This is the reason for honouring and recognising him as one “New African’s 100 most influential Africans 2015.
Elumelu is also the founder and chairman of Heirs Holdings, a privately held investment firm with interests in the power, oil and gas, financial services and hospitality sectors across Africa. He is chairman of Transcorp, Nigeria’s largest listed conglomerate, and Seadrill Nigeria Ltd.
