A meeting of Nigeria’s military service chiefs and President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, revealed the challenges facing the military in the fight against Boko Haram.

As revealed by the Chief of Defence Staff, Ganeral Abayomi Olonisakin, the challenges are  bad weather and the shortage of logistics.

These problems he said were hindering the war against the Boko Haram.

The closed-door meeting, which lasted two hours, was also attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and National Security Adviser (NSA) Major-General Babagana Monguno (rtd).

“It was a normal consultation to intimate him (the president) of the issues on ground. We briefed him on the security situation on ground after a 60-day review and we had to brief him on the challenges we have and ensure that the mandate we have is properly delivered”, he said.

Speaking on what the president’s response was, Olonisakin, said: “He (Buhari) was very excited, very happy. As for our request, he gave the mandate”.

Olonisakin however, noted that the military had not said it was considering an extension of the December deadline to end the Boko Haram insurgency.

It would be recalled that the president has given the military three months to wipe out the insurgents. The war looked like it was already won for a while, until the recent series of bombings in the city of Maiduguri, which has led many to cast doubt on the chances of the military ending Boko Haram terror by December.
