BREAKING NEWS: Adeleke declared winner of Osun governorship election

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke was declared winner of Saturday’s governorship election on Sunday, having secured victory in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas.

The State Returning Officer, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, announced the result at approximately 7:24 am on Sunday, returning Adeleke to office for a second term.

Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord party, polled a total of 511,067 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who won 11 local government areas.

Adeleke won in Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Iwo, Egbedore, Ife North, Ife East, Ife Central, Oriade, Ifelodun, Orolu, Ayedaade, Ayedire, Odo Otin, Boluwaduro, Ilesa West, Ifedayo, and Osogbo.

Oyebamiji, meanwhile, won in Irewole, Isokan, Olorunda, Atakumosa East, Atakumosa West, Ilesa East, Boripe, Irepodun, and Obokun.

Announcing the results, Ogunwole said a total of 1,010,684 voters were accredited. Votes received by the political parties were as follows: Accord (A) – 511,067; AA – 2,308; AAC – 1,458; ADC – 17,180; ADP – 2,946; APC – 444,815; APGA – 1,475; APM – 234; APP – 114; BP – 111; NNPP – 118; PRP – 83; SDP – 155; YPP – 534; and ZLP – 2,482. Total valid votes cast stood at 985,079, with 207 rejected votes, bringing the total number of votes cast to 1,005,800.

After party agents signed the results, the Returning Officer formally declared Adeleke the winner.

“That Ademola Nurudeen-Jackson Adeleke, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner of the August 15 governorship election and returned elected,” Ogunwole announced.

The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Najeem Salaam, placed third in the poll.
