Police declare Babangida’s spokesman, Afegbua wanted

Kassim Afegbua, media consultant to Ibrahim Babangida, former military president, has been declared wanted by the police over a controversial statement he issued on Sunday.

Jimoh Moshood, police spokesman, stated this in a statement released on Monday.

“The IGP has ordered the arrest of Kassim Afegbua for making false statements, injurious falsehood, defamation of character and for an act capable of inciting public disturbance throughout the country.

“He is therefore declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force and should report at the nearest police station anywhere he is in the country,” Moshood said.

Afegbua had issued a statement on behalf of Babangida urging Nigerians not to vote President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. But another statement purportedly signed by Babaginda was released shortly after. The second statement denied the critical issues raised in the first one stating that the words were Afegbua’s.

However, Afegbua insisted that Babaginda authorized the statement he issued in a programme on Channels Television.

“I have been doing this job for about 14 years now. And I have never issued a statement on behalf of the former head of state and he gave a rebuttal. I got authorisation and commitment from him before I issued the statement. It has been in process,” he said.

Moreover, Babaginda himself confirmed the authenticity of Afegbua’s statement in a chat with THISDAY on Monday.
