English Premier League (EPL) action made the New Year a memorable one, as the first day of 2018 saw goals in all the Premier League games played.

Manchester United fans will no doubt be delighted, as their team has finally returned to winning ways having recorded three successive draws in their previous outings.

Jose Mourinho’s men got it right on New Year day by beating Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park.

Second-half goals from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard saw United make a winning start to 2018, lifting them back above Chelsea and into second place in the process.

Everton, on the other hand, have now fallen to back-to-back defeats for the first time since October.

Their impressive five-match unbeaten home streak in the league has come to an end following an ineffectual display at their home ground on Monday.

In the game played at Turf Moor, an injury-time goal gave Liverpool a dramatic 2-1 victory at Burnley just when it looked like the game would end in a stalemate.

Sadio Mane’s brilliant strike gave Liverpool the lead but Johann Gudmundsson levelled three minutes from time — only for Ragnar Klavan to head home in the 94th minute for the Reds.

Elsewhere, Nigeria’s Wilfred Ndidi and his Leicester City teammates had a flying start in 2018 as they pounded Huddersfield Town 3-0 at the King Power Stadium.

The Foxes scored twice in seven second-half minutes as they romped to the big win.

Meanwhile, Brighton & Hove Albion and AFC Bournemouth ended their tie in a stalemate as the game ended 2-2.

There was joy for Newcastle United finally as their winless run ended with a 1-0 win away to Stoke City.

In the game played on Sunday, a spirited Crystal Palace side held Pep Guardiola’s Man City to a goalless draw. It was a match not short of events despite the scoreline. Pep Guardiola’s side had looked unstoppable heading into the Selhurst Park clash, having won their last 18 league games, but were held by a well organised Eagles team, who themselves have now lost just one of their last 10 matches. Palace could have won it in second-half added time when they were awarded a penalty, but Luka Milivojevic’s effort was saved by Ederson to leave Roy Hodgson’s side in 17th on 19 points. City are 14 points clear at the top of the table and are still unbeaten in the Premier League, but Guardiola has confirmed Gabriel Jesus will be out for up to two months following an injury in the first half, while Kevin De Bruyne was stretchered off with a leg injury in second-half stoppage time.

It was a dull affair at the Hawthorns though in a match that didn’t come to life until the 83th minute. Alexis Sanchez had put the Gunners ahead through a freekick via a James McLean deflection only to be pegged back by a contentious penalty after Calling Chambers was adjudged to have raised his hand towards the ball. The result means Arsenal are fifth, three points off the top four going into 2018, while West Brom are 19th, above bottom side Swansea on goal difference.
