Senate rejects Magu’s nomination as EFCC Chairman

After postponing the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on more than one occassion, Nigerian Senate has refused to grant confirmation to the nomination of the former.Magu EFCC

Explaining the reason behind the decision, the Senate said that security report available to it, showed that Mr Magu is not fit to be chairman of the body.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday, Abdullahi Sabi, spokesman of the senate, said:

“The senate of the federal republic of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public that based on the security report available to the senate, the senate cannot proceed and confirm the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as the executive chairman of the EFCC,” he said

“Accordingly, the senate hereby rejects the said nomination and has returned it to Mr President for further action.”

When the upper legislative chamber emerged from a closed-door session, Bukola Saraki, senate president, said the other nominated members should face the anti-corruption committee for screening.
