Officers of the Intelligence Response Unit of the Nigeria Police Force, have arrested three brothers, namely; Johnson Emmanuel, 38, Gideon, 31, and Success, 27.
The siblings are accused of kidnapping and gruesomely killing one Janet Nnenna Ogbonnaya on May 14, 2020.
The suspects, who hail from Isiekenesi, Ideato Local Government Area of Imo State, were arrested in their home town, where they were reportedly taking refuge after committing the crime in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The suspects were nabbed, following a complaint received from one Chinedu, who alleged that his mother, Ogbonnaya, 55, a native of Ozuitem in Bende LGA of Abia State, had been kidnapped and N5 million ransom had been demanded for her release.
According to the police, a painstaking investigation resulted in the arrest of the three suspects, who confessed during interrogation that the victim had long been killed and buried.
The police said further investigation revealed that the victim, a widow and Facebook friend of the principal suspect, Johnson, was lured from her home in Gwagwalada, to visit the suspect.
The suspect, thereafter, took advantage of the visit, served her yoghurt laced with drugs and subsequently killed her.
Johnson then buried her remains in a septic tank, and used the phone of the victim to demand ransom from her family.
The suspects, on Thursday, led a team of investigators, alongside pathologists to a residence at Wumba District, Lokogoma, in the FCT, where the victim’s decomposing body was exhumed from a septic tank.
The exhumed body was taken to the University Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, for forensic examination.
A Toyota Highlander Jeep belonging to the deceased was also recovered by the police at a mechanic workshop in Apo, where it had been repainted.
Also, the vehicle documents has been changed and ownership criminally transferred to one of the masterminds of the crime, Johnson.
Investigations also revealed that the house, where the deceased was killed and buried, originally belonged to one of the suspects, but was quickly sold-off to a third party, to cover up the evidence.
Mohammed Adamu, Inspector General of Police, while commending the operatives for a job well done, reassured that perpetrators of any form of crimes in the country will not go unpunished.
