The federal government could not stop former NSA, Sambo Dasuki from obtaining his international passport as a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja granted his application for speedy and urgent medical treatment overseas.
Mr. Dasuki is charged with illegal possession of firearms and money laundering, but has pleaded not guilty.
Although, his passport was one of the conditions for his bail, he requested the release of his travel documents as he is said to be in need of medical attention.
On hearing the arguments today, Justice Adeniyi Ademola, said the prosecution counsel failed to show reason why the document should not be released.
He therefore, ordered the court registrar to immediately release the passport and allow Mr. Dasuki travel for three weeks, after which he would return the passport.
On return, Dasuki’s bails terms would be changed, as he would be required to produce a surety or have his counsel issue an undertaking before he is released on bail.
Speaking on the judgement, Mr. Dasuki’s counsel, Ahmed Raji, described the judgement as a good one, saying:
“It is only a person with life that can defend himself; a dead man cannot defend himself.”
