The Champions League games played on Wednesday saw Manchester United rely David De Gear to secure a 0-0 draw against Sevilla, while Shakhtar Donetsk beat Roma 2-1.
Highlight
Shakhtar Donetsk’s South American blend proved too strong for Roma as goals from Facundo Ferreyra and Fred gave them a 2-1 win in a Champions League tie played in freezing conditions on Wednesday.
The Serie A team appeared to be coasting in the round of 16 first leg tie when Cengiz Under put them ahead with his fifth goal in four games four minutes before halftime.
Yet as the temperature dipped towards minus nine Celsius, Argentine striker Ferreyra took advantage of poor Roma defending to score with an expertly-taken goal in the 52nd minute.
That turned the game on its head and it was no surprise when Brazilian midfielder Fred curled in a free kick off the underside of the crossbar to stun the visitors in the 71st minute.
Shakhtar almost extended their lead at the death, only for Ferreyra effort from six yards to be blocked by Alisson and Manolas on the line.
In the other game of the night, a stunning save from David De Gea ensured Manchester United left Sevilla with a goalless draw to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
De Gea denied Luis Muriel with a point-blank reaction stop just before half-time as Jose Mourinho’s disjointed United side held on for a 0-0 stalemate at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.
The result means Sevilla can qualify for the quarter-finals if they seal a score draw at Old Trafford in the second leg, though United will be confident of progressing despite failing to secure an away goal in Sevilla.
