EPL: Manchester City sink United to go top as Wolves whip Arsenal, dent top four hope

Manchester City give a proper account of themselves and gave their hopes of retaining their Premier League title a huge boost by defeating city rivals Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Two goals from from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane in the second half, saw City reclaim top spot from Liverpool with three games remaining.

City broke the deadlock in 54th minute through Silva who weaved his way into the box and drove a low, left-footed shot in at the near post.

And in the 66th minute, substitute Sane doubled Citys’ lead with a near-post strike after being fed by Raheem Sterling.

City boss Pep Guardiola is now the first manager in Premier League history to win three consecutive games against Man Utd at Old Trafford.

It was United’s seventh defeat in their last nine games in all competitions.

City are now top in the Premier League table on 89 points, while Liverpool are second on 88 points.

United remain sixth on 64 points, two points adrift of the fourth place.

Wolverhampton Wanderers thrash Arsenal

Meanwhile, a the Molineaux, Arsenal’s top four ambitions suffered another setback as they were beaten 3-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Arsenal went into the game hoping to make amends for their 3-2 home loss to Crystal Palace at the weekend, but conceded three goals in 19 first half minutes against the newly promoted side who are now seventh on the log.

Wolves went 1-0 up on 28 minutes thanks to Ruben Neves whose 25 yards free-kick nestled into the back of the net.

In the 37 minute,  Wolves worked a short corner into a crossing position before Matt Doherty rose to double the lead.

And in two minutes of first half added time, Wolves went 3-0 up ws Diogo Jota seized on a loose ball, raced clear and fired low under Bernd Leno.

With 10 minutes remaining, Arsenal grabbed a consolation goal as Sokratis Papatathopoulos headed in Granit Xhaka’s corner to make it 3-1.

Arsenal occupy the fifth position on 66 points, just one point off Chelsea who are fourth.
