Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld scored a 90th minute own goal to hand Liverpool a 2-1 victory over the North Londoners in their Premier League match at Anfield on Sunday.

It was Roberto Firmino who opened the scoring for Liverpool after heading in Andrew Robertson’s cross in the 16th minute.

However, Lucas Moura drew Spurs back level in the 70th minute.

Sadio Mane almost doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 20th minute only to see his curler from the edge of the box go just wide off target. The Senegalese forward went close again on 36 minutes with another curler but again saw his effort go inches wide.

In the 54th minute Alisson produced an important stop to deny Harry Kane before Robertson made a timely block.

Liverpool are back to the top of the league table on 79 points while Manchester City drop to second on 77 points.

Meanwhile, Chelsea staged a remarkable late revival to snatch a controversial 2-1 victory at relegation-threatened Cardiff City and ease the intensifying pressure on boss Maurizio Sarri.

Ponderous and painfully slow, Chelsea controlled possession but did little with it as they were comfortably shackled by a disciplined Cardiff side during a goalless first half.

The hosts took the lead less than a minute into the second period thanks to Victor Camarasa’s delicate curling volley, prompting cries of “we want Sarri out” from Chelsea’s travelling fans.

With five minutes left, Cezar Azpilicueta nodded in an equaliser from a clearly offside position and then, in added time, substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek headed the winner to break Cardiff hearts.

The result is a major blow to Cardiff’s bid for Premier League survival, leaving them five points adrift of safety with seven games remaining.
