Surulere area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria saw a raging fire consume a family of five, made up of three generations.
The catastrophe took place at Michael Oguns Street, Obele, Lawanson area of Surulere. The incident threw the entire area into mourning.
Consumed in the inferno were the grandmother, mother, father and two children-a baby and a girl.
“It was an unfortunate incident, it was a very sad day in this area, a whole family roasted in overnight fire, this is sad,” said an eye witness.
Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe confirmed the incident, saying that the tragedy occurred at 21 Michael Ogun, Street, Obele, Surulere.
“Tragedy, a family of five persons, father, mother, grandmother, a baby and a girl were consumed by fire at 21 Michael Ogun Street, Obele, Lawanson,” he said.
He said officials of the fire service battled for a long time before they could put out the fire. The names of the victims could not be ascertained as at the time of this report.
The fire only consumed the room and parlour self-contain where the family lived and it is suspected that they might be sleeping when the inferno began. As at the time of filing this report, it is not certain what led to the fire.
Fadipe also disclosed that an unidentified man who was sleeping under a mobile truck was also crushed to death while he was fast asleep at Sari-Iganmu area of Lagos.
“A man who slept under a truck was also unknowingly crushed at Sari Iganmu in the midnight”, he said.
