Roger Federer came from a set down to beat Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro 6-7 6-4 6-3 to clinch the Swiss Indoor title in his hometown of Basel.
The title was Federer’s seventh of the season, one more than won by rival Rafael Nadal. It was also Federer’s eighth in the tournament and his 95th in his stellar career.
Federer and the Argentine played for the third time for the trophy on Sunday, with the Argentine winning in 2012 and 2013.
But the Swiss ace managed not to let history repeat itself on Sunday, fighting back to clinch the following two sets.
The 36-year-old also kept alive the battle for the year-end No. 1 Emirates ATP Ranking, pulling to within 1,460 points of Rafael Nadal with the final ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the year in Paris and the Nitto ATP Finals still to go.
Federer can capture a combined 2,500 points at those two events, reports the ATP website.
Federer extended his lead in the pair’s FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry to 18-6, capturing his fifth win in their past six matches.
