According to Thierry Henry, Premier League’s ‘big guns’ need to do more to put their stamp on the division. Henry expressed his opinion after Liverpool succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at Newcastle, arguing that the league’s traditional top clubs need to do more if they are to maintain their status.

“At some point the big guns need to come out and say ‘hang on a minute, this our league’ and they need to make a statement,” he said.

“You can’t have Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, City, United, whoever, acting the way they are acting. They need to come back and strong.

“I understand that the ‘lesser sides’ are closing the gap but [the big guns] have to do better, way better, find some consistency. That is why, for me, ultimately, three of the teams out of four are struggling in Europe.”

He encouraged Newcastle to show the same level of commitment and desire that they managed against Liverpool at St James’ Park in their away games, starting at Tottenham next weekend.

“Steve McClaren said it himself, how many times have we seen it when a big team comes to St James Park and the desire is there, the commitment, everything,” he said.

“Everything was spot on today and you could see it from the start. Can you do the same thing at the Lane? Can you do the same thing against Arsenal? Can you do the same thing away from home?

“That’s the thing with Newcastle and we talk about the same thing every time and usually it doesn’t happen. Let’s see against Tottenham next week.”
