INEC declares APC’s Gboyega Oyetola winner of Osun governorship election

The electoral umpire in Nigeria, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Friday morning declared Gboyega Oyetola, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of the Osun State governorship election.

Oyetola was returned winner after he won Thursday’s re-run poll scheduled by INEC after the initial election on Saturday.

According to Joseph Fuwape, the Chief Returning Officer of the election, Oyetola polled 255,505 votes while his closest challenger, Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  polled 255,023 votes.

Fuwape declared the APC the winner after the party won six out of the seven polling units where the rerun election were held across four local government areas in the state.

In the polling unit 2, ward 10 in Oyere, Ife North LGA, the APC got a total of 126 votes while the PDP got two (2) votes.

In Ife South LGA were the election held in two polling units, it was also a clean sweep for the APC. The ruling party polled 283 votes, while the PDP garnered 15 votes in Olode. The APC got 172 votes, while the PDP had 21 votes in Osi.

In Osogbo LGA, where the state capital is located, the APC swept to victory in the single polling unit; Unit 17, Ward 5, as it polled 299 votes as against the PDP’s 165 votes.

The APC also coasted home to victory in Orolu, winning two out of the three polling units in the local government.

In Ward 08, Unit 1, the APC got a total of 111 votes while the PDP got three votes in Ifon, Orolu. Similarly, in Ward 08 Unit 4, in Idiya, the APC polled 128 votes, the PDP got 55 votes. However, in Ward 9, Unit 3, in Gbogbo, the PDP won by polling 64 votes to APC’s 41.

In total, the APC won a total of 1,160 votes in the rerun election, while the PDP got 325 votes of the 2,637 votes on offer.

In the initial election which held on Saturday, Fuwape declared that PDP’s Adeleke scored a total of 254,698votes, while APC’s Oyetola polled 254,345 votes, with just a tiny margin of 353 votes between the leading two candidates.

But when the votes from the rerun election are added to the initial election figures, the APC candidate won with a margin of 482 votes.

The initial election was declared inconclusive by INEC because the margin between the two leading candidates was lower than the margin of the cancelled votes of 2,637 vote. It, therefore scheduled the rerun election for Thursday.

Thursday’s election had a reported 14 votes which were voided, with six votes voided in Olode, three votes in Ifon, four votes in Idiya and one vote in Gbogbo.

The voided votes, this time around, was not bigger than the 2,637 votes sought after for by both candidates.

With this victory, Oyetola now becomes the Governor-elect and will replace the Governor Rauf Aregbesola, whom he serves as his Chief of Staff, in November.
