INEC declares Nyesom Wike winner of Rivers Election

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and incumbent governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has been declared winner of the governorship election in the state.

Wike, who is the incumbent governor of the state, was declared re-elected for a second term by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday after he won the election in 19 out of the 23 Local Government Areas in the state.

According to the result declared by Teddy Adias, the election’s Returning Officer, Governor Wike polled a total of 886,264 votes, while his closest rival, Biokpomabo Awara of the African Action Congress (AAC), garnered 173,859 votes.

This means that the PDP governorship candidate recorded a wide margin of 712,405 votes against his AAC opponent.

“That I, this day confirm that I am the returning officer for this election and that Nyesom Wike of the PDP having satisfied requirement of the law and scored the highest number of the votes is hereby declared winner and returned elected,” Adias, a Professor at the Niger Delta University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, said.

The collation process, which was suspended for three weeks after the elections, resumed on Wednesday after it was adjourned following the declaration of results of 15 Local Government Areas on Tuesday.

Governor Wike won in six more LGAs, according to the results declared by INEC on Wednesday.

The governor defeated Awara in Ogbubolo, Obia Akpor, Asari Toru, Degema, Ahoada West and Khana LGAs.

This is in addition to the 13 LGAs; Port Harcourt, Ikwerre, Andoni, Eleme, Opobo Nkoro, Bonny, Okrika, Omuma, Tai, Ahoada East, Emohua, Etche and Onelga LGAs, declared in favour of the PDP candidate on Tuesday.

Awara won Oyigbo and Akuku Toru LGAs.

The election did not hold in Abua/Uduah LGA.
