Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick as Barcelona equalled Real Sociedad’s 38-game unbeaten LaLiga record with a 3-1 win over Leganes at Camp Nou on Saturday night.

Sociedad set the record almost 40 years ago and leaders Barcelona, unbeaten this season, will be sole owners of the record if they avoid defeat against Valencia next weekend.

The victory over Leganes took Barcelona 12 points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid, who will travel to the champions Real Madrid on Sunday

Messi opened scoring in the 27th minute with a superb freekick for his 27th league goal of the season and added the second five minutes later.

Nabil El Zhar pulled one back for Leganes in the 68th minute but Messi made sure of the points for Barcelona in the 87th minute with his 29th league goal of the season, 39th in all competitions.

Barcelona are top of the table with 79 points from 31 games, while Leganes are 14th with 36 points.
