Senator Shehu Sani, who represents Kaduna Central Senatorial zone, said that the proposed increase of tariff by electricity distribution companies would be rejected by Nigerians.
The remark was made when the Senator donated a 300 KV transformer to Haying Dan Mani community in Kaduna.
The Senator, who was represented by his Senior Special Adviser on Politics and Ideology, Sulaiman Ahmad, said the increase would lead to untold hardship on the people.
He said the issue of fixed charges must also be addressed.
“The companies need to consolidate on improved power supply, strengthen existing structures before thinking of increasing the tariff.
“We must have enough transformers, cables and meters, and enough supply of electricity before we could welcome any increment.
“If you consume light you must pay, but a situation (where) one may be asked to pay when he did not have light for one, two months is abnormal.
“In a situation where you are charged a flat rate of N5,000 even when there is no light for a month or two months. So, I don’t know the rationale behind such actions taken by the electricity company.
“I dont know the rational for charging a domestic home ‘for what they did not use because of fixed charges,” the senator said.
He further stated that the National Assembly will look at the issue of electricity distribution and propose a bill to that effect.
The District Head of Hayin Dan Mani, Abba Abdullahi, said the area had no light for four months because of a faulty transformer.
While expressing appreciation, the village head appealed for more transformers for another area in the village that faced same problem.
“You have done what leaders are supposed to do to his people and we shall never forget you for that,” he said.
