Oyo central market shut down over alleged violence by rival gangs

The central market in Oyo town, popularly known as Akesan was shut on Monday morning as rival gangs unleashed violence on the market and its nearby areas.

Dangerous weapons such as bottles, machetes, guns etc were used freely in the ‘payback’ attack, according to residents, the latest recorded violence between dreaded rival gangs known as Agunpopo and Ilaka has become a reoccurrence violence.

The attack of the Agunpopo group to the Ilaka gang on Monday morning has resulted into shutting down of the Akesan market.

Those familiar with the immediate cause of the clash alleged that the Ilaka group went to the Agunpopo’s carnival on Saturday night to create a scene.

Residents have reportedly told road users to divert all routes that leads to the market which includes Apinni, Kanga, Garage and Palace roads. Traders were also prevented from opening their shops on Monday.

The total number of casualties has not been ascertained, but a witness said one person was killed in the course of the fight.
