Gun battle between the Oyo State Police Command and a gang of suspected armed robbers raping women and terrorising Ogbomoso and Oyo town has left one of the bandits dead and two others with serious injuries.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhammadu Musa Katsina, said all the suspects arrested were six in number.
Parading the suspects with dangerous weapons allegedly found on them, the state police boss assured residents of the state of their safety, adding that with effective policing which his command had embarked upon and with array of trusted and capable men working with him, there would be no problem at all.
One of the robbery suspects, Fatai Balogun who live at Ode-Aje area of Ibadan confessed to the crime saying he joined the gang about one year ago and within that time, he had participated in no fewer than seven armed robbery operations at Ogbomoso and Oyo axis.
The suspect also confirmed that his gang killed a woman at Akinmorin area of Oyo.
Another suspect, Mr. Ibrahim Idris who claimed to have graduated from Olabisi Onabanjo University †owned up that he bought and sold stolen items for the gang.
He lamented that it was joblessness that forced him to work for the gang.
According to him, “I met this man, Balogun at a drinking joint where he asked me to sell a phone for N12,000 but I later sold it for† N20,000. The gain I made within some minutes lured me to sell more items for them.
A woman who was raped by the men of the underworld identified the suspects as her attackers.
She said, “they came around 3:20 am on May 28 and they started shooting aimlessly. They injured some people. That one who is dead was the one that raped me. Also, that fair complexioned one in the ambulance took some girls to the back of our house and raped them”.
