A policeman has shot dead an election observer in Enugu State on Saturday.
The incident happened in Umuida community, Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state, some metres away from the residence of Ayogu Eze, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
He was said to have been shot in the head. He was first taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Enugu Ezike before he was transferred to another hospital in Enugu town.
Ebere Amaraizu, the spokesman of the state police command, said the incident was a case of accidental discharge.
It was reported that the slain observer had a confrontation with the policeman at a polling unit before he was shot. It also said APC supporters and agents at the polling unit where the observer was killed, confronted journalists and observers.
There was security reinforcement from the army and police after the incident.
