Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer cruise to French Open quarter-finals

Tennis superstars, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have qualified for the quarterfinals of the French Open after winning their fourth-round matches on Sunday.

Federer defeated Argentine Leonardo Mayer in straight sets 6-2 6-3 6-3.

Federer, whose only French Open title came in 2009, claimed the first two sets in 67 minutes with Mayer winning just nine points on the Swiss’ serve.

Mayer, ranked world number 68, offered more resistance, but folded in the sixth game of the third set as Federer took the decisive break.

Federer plays compatriot Stan Wawrinka or Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas next.

Should he emerge victorious in the quarter-final, the 37-year-old Swiss is seeded to meet Nadal, 11-time French Open champion in the semi-finals and world number one Novak Djokovic in the final.

Nadal, on the other hand, also secured a comfortable straight set victory of 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 against Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero.

The “King of Clay”, as the Spaniard is popularly called, won what was his 90th match at Roland Garros.

The 32-year-old Nadal will face either Japan’s Kei Nishikori or Benoit Paire of France for a semi-final place.

Nadal has only been defeated twice in his French Open career
