The Kano State government has decided to give serious consideration to the issue of rape and the punishment. To this end, any convicted rapist would serve not two years, but a minimum of 14 years and life in prison maximum.The State Solicitor-General, Mukthar Sani Daneji, disclosed this yesterday, while ddressing a assemblage of legal and para-legal personalities, tagged ‘’Justice for all in Kano’’.
Deneji explained that with the awareness campaign now, most parents have been coming forward to complain about their children being raped.
He said so far, the government had disposed of hundreds of cases, adding that many people had been convicted after being found guilty.
The Country Director of the Justice for All, Mr Bob Arnot, said his organisation is working in collaboration with Police and Judiciary to increase safety, security and justice reform aspect of sexual gender violations.
Bob Arnot revealed that the Justice for All was assisting NGOs and CSOs to establish referral centers for victims of HIV and other sexual abuse problems.
He, however expressed worries that out of over 1000 cases they have recorded still what they have disposed in terms of having justice on it is nothing to write home about.
