The tribunal sitting over false declaration of assets by Senate President Bukola Saraki has ruled that trial must continue regardless of a pending appeal against the continuation of the case at the Supreme Court.
Reacting to the ruling, two Senior Advocates of Nigeria from Dr. Saraki’s legal team; Ahmed Magaji and Ahmed Raji, walked out of the Code of Conduct Tribunal after chairman of the tribunal, Umar Danladi, decided to continue hearing.
Reacting, Mr. Magaji said: “It is a strange situation; it is not done anywhere that a matter is pending before a higher court, as the one in the Supreme Court and proceedings will continue in a smaller court.”
Saraki requested for a month to put himself together and get a new lawyer, but the request was not granted, as the prosecution argued that the time was too long.
The prosecution counsel, Mr. Rotimi, then requested 11 days, which was granted after Saraki was asked if it was favourable.
The case has been adjourned till Thursday, November 19.
