Should You Get a Cat or Dog for Your Family?

Cats and dogs are amongst the most common choices for a family pet — and some households may even have both. If you’re considering your first (or next) family pet, you may be thinking primarily about a cat or a dog.

While there are pros and cons to each, what matters most is that you do your research into the different types of pets you’re considering and ensure that you are financially stable enough to care for a pet long term, whether a cat or a dog.

Here are some points to help you decide.

Dogs are Great for Exercise

If you’re looking for a pet that is going to keep you active and get you outdoors more, then a dog is the right choice. With a dog, you will need at least two walks a day, with the opportunity for long hikes and exploration with your beloved pet.

Cats will take care of their own exercise, or you might have an indoor cat, meaning no opportunity for walking with your pet.

Cats are Less Restricting

Cats are great pets for those families who don’t like to be tied down too much. Because cats require less attention and don’t need walking, you can more easily plan your routine around a cat without the need to fit in daily walks.

Cats can also more easily be left to their own devices, whereas a dog may demand a lot of your time and attention.

Dogs Can Be More Difficult to Take to the Vets

This can be dependent on the size of breed you might consider, but overall, a cat is much easier to take to the vets in a carry case and pop on the table. Large dogs, however — and especially those not trained properly — can be a handful in a crowded waiting area or in an examination room if they need to be lifted on to the table. Not to mention the drive to the vets with a large dog can be stressful, too.

Of course, trained vets will always know how to handle your pet if they’re anxious, and finding a service you can trust — with a vet who gets to know your pet over their lifetime — can make a vet experience a whole lot easier. Doing your research into a veterinarian in Midlothian VA and surrounding areas means you can always find a service suited to your particular pet.

Cats are More Independent

There’s always a risk that you could get a cat who doesn’t like attention whatsoever and prefers to keep to itself. Cats are very independent pets, which means if you have a family looking for a pet that they can actively play with and gain affection from, a cat might not be the best choice.

That being said, some cats can provide a large amount of affection and cuddles. It’s just never guaranteed.

Dogs are Overly Affectionate

If there’s anything that can be said about dogs, it’s that they give unconditional affection. Dogs will be more obvious and open with their love, which is better for those families who are looking for an extremely friendly pet.

Cat or Dog?

Choosing between a dog or cat is very much down to what your family needs from a pet and your lifestyle routine. If your routine is busy and you don’t want a pet that demands a lot of your time, a cat is a great choice. If you’re looking to explore with your pet and have affection whenever you need it, a dog would be perfect.
