The Sun Newspaper reporter, others shot in Lokoja

Emmanuel Adeyemi, a journalist with the Sun Newspaper, was among some persons that were shot in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, on Monday as hoodlums were on rampage looting items from a warehouse.

Adeyemi was shot as he made his way to the NUJ Press Centre on Lugard Road in Lokoja, while another unidentified person was also shot on the same road.

The two persons were rushed to the Lokoja City Clinic, a private facility where they are currently being treated.

The passerby was said to have just arrived from Benue State and caught up in the middle of the incident.

The gunshots followed the resumption of looting of palliatives in another warehouse in the Zone 8 area of Lokoja.

It was learnt the looted palliatives were meant for flood victims in the state.

Gunshots rented the air while all shops along the Murtala Mohammed Way, Lokoja, were closed, with people scampering to safety.

The hoodlums also invaded government warehouse located on Hassan Usman Katsina Road to loot various items.

They forced their way into the warehouse, carted away mattresses, drugs and food items.

Security agents deployed to the warehouse were over-powered by the protesters, who after looting the warehouse, headed for the city centre.

They vandalised the ATM of a UBA branch along Babangida Road and other facilities in the area.

William Aya, spokesperson of the Kogi State Police Command, confirmed the incident.

The hoodlums had on Sunday invaded the ADP warehouse, also in Lokoja, and bags of fertilizer were carted away.

In the aftermath of the #EndSARS protest, various public and private properties have been burnt and looted, while COVID-19 palliatives stored in warehouses in various states of the federation have been illegally taken.
