There was pandemonium in Ibadan, capital of Oyo state, as a young man simply identified as Sola committed suicide after he climbed and jumped down from the peak of a mast belonging to WEMA Bank at Sango area in Ibadan.

Confirming the sad incident, Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Oyo State Command, Mr Olugbenga Fadeyi, said:

“The naked man came to the bank’s branch in Sango and entered the building through its small gate,” as he said “people who saw him thought he was a mad man

“It was after he gained entrance into the bank’s premises that he climbed the bank’s mast before the security personnel became aware of his action,” Fadeyi said.

He had already climbed the mast to its peak, before they alerted the police, but before anything could be done, though the police responded immediately, the victim had jumped down to the roof of the bank.

“The District Police Officer (DPO) and Fire Service personnel who arrived the scene of the incident were swift to action to safe the man’s life, but the impact was so much that he crashed through the roof and fell inside the bank.

“An official of the bank was called in to open the premises.

“By the time the bank’s door was opened, the man was already bleeding through the mouth and was rushed to the University College Hospital where he was confirmed dead,’’ Fadeyi said.

The PPRO said the corpse had been deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital for autopsy while efforts were on to ascertain his identity.

In his reaction, the father of the victim who was accompanied by the mother described the incident as shocking and unbelievable.

The father refused to disclose his name but narrated that Sola had gone to church with his mother on Friday night and returned early on Saturday without any noticeable problem.

He said neither the victim’s mum nor himself knew when Sola left the house, only for them to be alerted by neighbours who saw him stripping himself on the road just before the incident.
