Dr. Ukoh, who works in Abuja, said this in an interview on Sunday.

She said abortion is a medical process of putting an end to a pregnancy by evacuating the foetus and placenta from the uterus.

She said it could be done either through the use of medications or through a surgical procedure.

She described medicinal abortion as a process where the woman takes medications in early pregnancy to terminate the foetus.

While surgical abortion is a procedure through which the foetus is evacuated from the uterus using a vacuum device.

She explained that abortion, does not cause infertility in women but complications during the procedure put women at high risk of infertility.

She further stated that studies have shown that there is an intersection between abortion and vaginal bleeding during early stage of pregnancy which leads to complications that could result in infertility. such complications are:

*Preterm birth problem.

*Weakened cervix.

*Damage or hole in the uterus.

Dr. Ukoh strongly advised absolute adherence to the use of antibiotics as prescribed by the doctor after an abortion because it helps in reducing the risk of infection in the reproductive organs which can cause infertility and ectopic pregnancy.

She also said intercourse for about two weeks after abortion should be prevented to enable the body to heal properly, as well as prevent immediate conception during the healing period.
