A costly mistake from David De Gea saw Chelsea force Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in Sunday’s Premier League top four battle.
United went 1-0 up in the 11th minute as Luke Shaw exchanged passes on the edge of the box, drove forward and cut the pass back for Mata to put the hosts in front.
With two minutes remaining in the first half, Chelsea equalised following a howler from David De Gea who spilled Rudiger’s long-range effort before Alonso reacted quickest to convert the rebound.
Both teams had the chance to win the game in added time but Marcos Alonso’s header from a corner was cleared off the line by Pedro Rodriguez while De Gea blocked Gonzalo Higuian’s goal bound strike.
Chelsea remain fourth on 68 points while United also stay in sixth on 65 points in the league table.
Earlier on Sunday, Manchester City returned to the top in the league after a hardfought 1-0 win against Burnley at Turf Moor.
Sergio Aguero’s 63rd minute goal which just crossed the line, was enough to secure the points for City who are now on 92 points, one above Liverpool.
