Liverpool’s long wait for first FA Community Shield title since 2006 continues, after they lost 5-4 on penalties to Manchester City in Sunday’s clash at Wembley Stadium.
The game went into penalties, after 90 minutes of football ended 1-1.
Raheem Sterling gave City the lead early in the first half, before substitute, Joel Matip, equalised for Liverpool with less than 15 minutes remaining in the game.
City retained the Shield which they won last year, following a 2-0 win against Chelsea. The Cityzens have now won the league curtain raiser six times.
City manager, Pep Guardiola was forced to make an early change in the 11th minute, as Leroy Sane went down with an Achilles problem, following a tangle with Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The Premier Legaue champions took the lead in the 12th minute, when Raheem Sterling scored from close range after David Silva’s clever flick. Sterling’s effort went through Alisson’s legs to score his first ever goal against his former club.
The England international almost got City’s second goal in the 48th minute, only to see his curler rebound off the woodwork.
Liverpool’s best chance came in the 58th minute, but Vigil van Dijk’s left-foot volley from a cross hit the goal line before bouncing away.
With 13 minutes remaining, the European champions were back on level terms, when Van Dijk laid the ball back across from Jordan Henderson’s freekick. Matip rose highest and nodded past Bravo.
Mohamed Salah thought he had won the game for Liverpool in added time, but his goal bound strike was brilliantly cleared off the line by Kyle Walker.
In the shootout, City players converted all their kicks, while Georginio Wijnaldum saw his effort saved by Claudio Bravo.
City are now unbeaten in all competitions in their last eight games at Wembley, since losing 2-1 to Arsenal in the 2017 FA Cup semi-final.
