Some 24 hours after a bomb attack on their team bus, Borussia Dortmund took to the field Wednesday in a Champions League quarterfinal encounter with Monaco.

It was not surprising to see Dortmund subdued in the first half and despite improving after the break they suffered a 3-2 first-leg loss — their first home defeat in 21 matches.

UEFA official Giorgio Marchetti told CNN Sport Wednesday that he had not encountered “nothing of this nature” before.

Despite the unusual circumstances the match went ahead under tightened security, with the motives and the identity of the attackers still unknown.

Admitting that this was the most difficult situation the club had faced in decades, Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said the club would “not bend before terror.”

In another game of the night, German giants, Bayern Munich lost at home 2 – 1 to Real Madrid. It was a match that saw Cristiano Ronaldo end a seven-month Champions League goal drought as holders Real Madrid came from behind to beat 10-man Bayern Munich in the first leg of their quarter-final in Munich.

Arturo Vidal had headed Bayern ahead but then wasted a chance to double their lead when he blasted a penalty over the crossbar.

And Ronaldo then twice clinically converted from crosses either side of Javi Martinez’s red card to move to 97 Champions League goals.

The only English team left in Europe’s elite competition, Leicester City visited Spain and kept Atletico Madrid within reach as they restricted the dominant Spaniards to a single goal in their Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Koke had already hit the visitors’ post in the first half when the referee judged Marc Albrighton’s foul on Antoine Griezmann had been inside the penalty area.

The 1 – 0 defeat means that Leicester City will still have the chance to fight for progression.
