ICPC declares Obono-Obla wanted

Mr Okoi Obono-Obla, former Chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel (SPIP), has been declared wanted by the Independent Corrupt Practises And Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Rasheedat Okoduwa, the spokesperson to the anti-graft agency made this known in a statement on Tuesday.

Obono-Obla is declared wanted because “His repeated failure to appear before it to answer questions bordering on allegations of fraud and corruption:.

The ICPC said the former Presidential aide, is facing a series of allegations which was leveled against him, by the members of the public, due to his role as the Head of government panel in asset recovery.

It read in part “The Commission is in receipt of petitions accusing him of abuse of office, falsification of admission records, living above his income and collection of gratification from suspects under his investigation.

“The suspended chairman is also facing allegations of working outside the guidelines governing the panel by investigating unauthorized petitions and prosecuting suspects without recourse to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation”.

According to the ICPC series of investigations have been conducted on the allegations with preliminary findings which shows that some provisions of some Corrupt Practises And Other Related Offences Act 2000, and extant laws of Nigeria have been violated by Mr Okoi Obono-Obla.

“Consequently, ICPC had extended several invitations to him, which he had failed to honour without giving any reason. Attempts to track and make him appear before the Commission also failed leading ICPC to contact other law enforcement agencies for assistance concerning his whereabouts.

“One of such contact has yielded results as records from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) show that Mr. Obono-Obla had travelled out of the country,”.

The EFCC has said the records of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), shows that Obono-Obla left the country through the Murtala Mohamed Airport on the 17th of August 2019, to an undisclosed location.
