Not less than thirty cart pushers have been arrested by the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit for alleged dumping of refuse on road medians in some parts of the state.

The suspects, who reportedly disposed of the rubbish at night, were apprehended during raids by the task force operatives

Olayinka Egbeyemi, the agency’s chairman, in a statement on Monday, said the arrest was in line with the ban on the activities of cart pushers and wheel- barrow operators by the state government.

He said the government would prosecute any person that contravened Cleaner Lagos Initiative, noting that the scheme was designed to align with the global best practices on waste management.

“There is reports that refuse is littering the Lekki, Victoria Island, Ajah and other areas of the state and investigations revealed that it is the handiwork of unscrupulous elements within Lagos State Waste Management Authority and their outside sponsors who are not comfortable with the new arrangement for the management of waste in the state.

“We also need to let Lagosians know that it is illegal to use cart pushers to evacuate refuse and they should stop encouraging it. There are PSP vehicles that come around to pack refuse and they are the ones they should patronise.”
