President Muhammadu Buhari has weighed in on the split between Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed and Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele over the redesigning of naira notes.
Recall that shortly after the apex bank announced plans to redesign the naira notes, Ms Ahmed, the finance minister, said that her ministry wasn’t consulted before the decision was taken.
However, responding to Ms Ahmed’s grievance, Buhari in a statement said he approved the redesigning of naira notes.
The president claimed that Nigeria stands to benefit greatly from the change in naira notes. He continued by saying that he did not think the three-month transition period to the new notes was too brief.
”People with illicit money buried under the soil will have a challenge with this but workers, businesses with legitimate incomes will face no difficulties at all,” Buhari said.
Nigerians with legal sources of income, according to the president, have nothing to fear from the country’s currency overhaul.
