Niger Tornadoes end Ifeanyi Ubah’s winning streak, Lobi Stars defeat Rangers; See full review of NPFL games

Leaders Lobi Stars returned to winning ways on Sunday after their midweek slump against champions Plateau United, defeating Rangers International 1-0 at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi.

Anthony Okpotu, who has endured an underwhelming 2017/2018 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) campaign this time around, scored the decisive goal.

Okpotu who was last season’s top scorer scored from a freekick in the 64th minute.

The Makurdi club have now garnered 40 points from 21 games, while Rangers are with 30 points from 22 games and have slipped to the seventh position on the log.

Kano Pillars moved to the second position after they held hosts Nasarawa United to a 0-0 draw in Lafia, with the Solid Miners maintaining their 14th position on the log.

The biggest result of the day however saw Niger Tornadoes of Minna record the weekend’s only away win, ending FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s six-game unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory in Nnewi.

Tornadoes scored first in the 72nd minute from a fine Mubarak Ejiogu strike.

Substitute Godwin Obaje levelled scores for the Anambra Warriors in the 90th minute but Bashir Usman stunned the home fans by grabbing the winner four minutes into stoppage time.

The result meant Niger Tornadoes leapfrogged to an impressive fourth position, while FC IfeanyiUbah remained on the 11th spot.

Champions Plateau United went down to a 1-0 defeat against Rivers United at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Osita Chikere netted the winning goal in the 16th minute off a freekick by Bernard Ovoke.

Kennedy Boboye’s men dropped to the third position on the table following the defeat, while Rivers United climbed to the sixth position on the log.

MFM FC lost 1-3 against Kwara United in Ilorin in spite of putting up a brave performance in the encounter.

The hosts who were battling to avoid the drop went ahead in the 16th minute through Segun Alebiosu following a blunder by Sunday Chinedu.

Sikiru Olatunbosun equalised for the visitors 10 minutes later, while Kwara United regained the lead from the penalty kick spot three minutes after the break.

Stephen Alfred scored for his ninth goal of the season, while Sunday Odudu scored the third for the hosts 15 minutes from time.

Kwara United who are still in the relegation zone moved one step up to 18th following their victory, while MFM FC maintained their 13th position on the log.

At the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, hosts Katsina United secured a slim 1-0 win against Sunshine Stars.

Tasiu Lawal grabbed the winning goal in the 61st minute after he was set up by Joshua Agboola.

Katsina United climbed to the fifth spot on the log, while the Akure-based club side still languish in the relegation zone in 19th.

Wikki Tourists recorded a 3-1 win against Yobe Desert Stars in Jos.

Nasiru Jibrin, Ocheme Edoh and Elijah Ani got the goals for the hosts, while Samuel Agba scored the consolation strike for Yobe Desert Stars.

The result meant the Bauchi-based clubside moved out of the relegation area to the 16th position, while Yobe Desert Stars maintained their 12th position on the 20-team NPFL table.

NAN also reports that a total of 14 goals were scored in seven games played on Sunday with five home wins, a draw and an away victory recorded.
