Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, has arrested a policeman who allegedly shot a commercial driver working for Akwa Ibom Transport Company, AKTC, for refusing to give bribe.
It was reported that the policeman at the driver at a road block along Iwukem road in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.
The State Police Commissioner, Murtala Mani, who said this during an interview with journalists in Uyo on Monday, disclosed that the command had launched a full-scale investigation into the matter.
Mani, who assured that the policeman would face justice if found culpable, declared that state command would not tolerate any form of indiscipline from the officers, adding that police officers in the command would be accountable for their actions.
The CP, however, revealed that the wounded driver was recuperating from the gunshot injury and was in a stable condition.
He said: “The cases of homicide which was on the rise in Akwa Ibom State has reduced because of the proper synergy between the Police Homicide Department and state anti-robbery squad.
“I urge the people of the state not to worry about the increased presence of Police patrol vehicles on the streets. It is part of the strategy to show the populace of Police readiness to ensure crime free Yuletide.”
