The Nigerian male table tennis team today won the country’s first medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Austraila, claiming the silver medal.
The team came in second position after they were defeated 3-0 by India in the Table Tennis team event final at the Gold Coast 2018 games.
Bode Abiodun, who was the first to play, won the first set by 11-4, but subsequently lost the next three sets to Sharath Achanta to lose by 1-3 games. Veteran player, Segun Toriola also won the first set of his game 12-10, but like Abiodun lost the next three games 11-3, 11-3, and 11-4 respectively.
In the doubles game, the duo of Olajide Omotayo and Abiodun lost all three games 11-8, 11-5, and 11-3 to the Indian duo of Harmeet Desai and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran.
Despite the loss, the table tennis team has registered Nigeria’s name on the medal table for the first time at the games.
